I chose this verse because this is the season when many of us try to give a little extra to those in need. It is also the season that we tend to spend the most on ourselves and our families, which sometimes leads to stress and anxiety.
I believe we should give because it’s the right thing to do, not because we hope to be rewarded, or because it makes us feel good, but maybe all of these things are intertwined.
How many of us would continue giving to the poor if it made us upset? But it doesn’t make us upset, it makes us feel good, and maybe feeling good is our reward. I think our reward is much more than that, both on earth and in heaven, but if feeling good is all we get for giving to the poor, that’s okay with me. It makes us feel good because it is obeying God, and therefore the right thing to do.
During this holiday season I hope all of us can take a little time to rest, spend some time with our families, and give a little extra to the poor. There will always be something left for ourselves if you put others first. Always.
