New Technology in Windshield Glass

Question:

Are there any restrictions/warnings for using your kits pertaining to new technology in windshield glass? For example, is there any concern in repairing windshields with forward-facing cameras (ADAS) or Heads Up Displays (HUDs)? From my research, it appears that the FMVSS 205 standard was last updated almost 20 years ago and may not reflect current technology and limitations for repair. I know some OEMs publish procedures on specific restrictions, I’m looking more for a high-level snapshot of where things are at in the industry today.

Answer:

Damage in an area of the windshield where value-added features may be negatively affected by the damage and/or the repair process; Repair technicians should consult and follow any vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations before performing a repair on any value-added feature. However, it’s been my experience that if it was working before the repair it should work after the repair, so we suggest testing those features before and after doing a repair.
